Ryan Gosling: “Do you know the story of the frog and the scorpion? Your friend Nino didn’t make it across the river!”.
“Drive” is a complex word in English… beyond the obvious translation relating to driving, it also means motivation, impulse, will, and also to drive (the latter particularly not to be underestimated). In short, Winding Refn’s film is all about this ambiguity, from the plot it would seem to be a Fast & Furious style film, with car chases, robberies, traps, revenge, but in reality it tells the story of a man who totally identifies in what he does, in the here and now. We know very little about the protagonist, played by an almost hypnotic Ryan Gosling, who in fact doesn’t even have a name, but only the nickname with which customers refer to him… Driver indeed. Best film of 2011.
