CAPTAIN MARVEL – 2019
The protagonist of this first film about Captain Marvel is the character of Carol Denvers, played by Brie Larson. She gains her superpowers after an explosion in which her DNA mixes with alien Kree DNA. She subsequently becomes Captain Marvel.
The Captain Marvel film presents her character with her origin story set in the 90s, with an immersion in the 20th century when movies were watched on VHS at home. Samuel L. Jackson has been digitally rejuvenated, the rhythm and tempos are more dilated as it was for the films of those years, but the messages of the film are very current. The search for identity of the protagonist played by Brie Larson is a hymn to feminism, an exhortation for every woman to find and express the potential that she possesses. The film does not address those politicians who feed the fear of the different directly, it chooses to speak to the spectators, reminding them that they can use their brains and common sense to stop listening to the wrong voices and start thinking for themselves. Captain Marvel is one of the few films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where the action is drastically secondary to the story it tells.
